What does baptism really mean—and how can you know for certain that you have eternal life?
(Captions in English and Spanish)
In this message from The Bay Community Church, Pastor Ollin Collins examines what the Bible teaches about baptism, salvation, repentance, and assurance.
Beginning with Christ's command to make disciples and baptize them in Matthew 28:19, Pastor Ollin explains an important distinction: baptism does not produce salvation. Instead, Biblical baptism follows salvation as an act of obedience to Christ and a public testimony of a person's faith in Him.
The message then addresses some of the common ideas people rely upon for reaching Heaven—including simply believing that God exists or trying to keep the Ten Commandments—and compares those ideas with Scripture.
From there, Pastor Ollin turns to the heart of the Gospel: all have sinned (Romans 3:23), sin carries a penalty (Romans 6:23), and Jesus Christ died for our sins to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). Romans 10:9 points to both believing that God raised Jesus from the dead and confessing Jesus as Lord.
Pastor Ollin also emphasizes repentance—not merely saying certain words, but sincerely turning toward Christ and beginning a life of seeking to follow Him.
For anyone who has ever wondered, “Am I really saved?”, this message offers an especially meaningful discussion of assurance. Drawing from 1 John 5:13, Pastor Ollin explains that a believer does not have to spend a lifetime wondering. Through a personal story about his son and the memorable illustration of “driving a stake in the ground,” he encourages those who are uncertain to settle the question of their relationship with Christ.
